Young Carer's at Woodcote

At Woodcote we are aware that some of our pupils are young carers. A young carer is someone under 18 who is caring unpaid for a family member who is ill, frail, disabled or has learning needs, mental health or addiction problems. They sometimes have to take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. Research suggests there are at least 700,000 young carers in the UK but many do not realise they are a young carer.

We know that young carers may need a little extra support to enjoy and do well at school and achieve their full potential. At Woodcote we are committed to ensuring that all pupils who are young carers are identified and supported effectively. In order to do this we are working with the “Carers Trust” to achieve the “ Young carers in school award”. This will include the option of 1:1 and peer group support in our school. We would also like young carers to help us shape and improve the future provision offered by the school by giving feedback on their experiences of the schools support.
